Outbrain Review for Publishers | 2018

Introduction to Outbrain

OutbrainOutbrain is a sponsored content network for publishers to advertise their content as well as earn revenue from sponsored content hosted on their sites. While sponsored content is a relatively new and unique form of monetization, compared to more traditional sources such as display or affiliate advertising, revenue potential is sponsored content is very low. Still, with high enough levels of traffic, a publisher can earn significant incremental revenue with Outbrain’s site widget.
Overall Rating: 4.8 out of 5.
  • What We Like: Easy to install, unique monetization method.
  • What We Don’t Like: Low earnings, high traffic minimum.

Publisher Requirements

  • Publisher Termshttp://www.outbrain.com/amplify/guidelines/
  • Traffic Minimum: 10 million monthly US article pageviews.
  • Publisher Language Requirement: None.
  • Prohibited Publisher Content: Adult, alcohol, financial services, gambling, games/contests/sweepstakes, health services, subscriber-only content, pornography, weaponry, illegal drugs or tobacco, non-government-approved pharmaceuticals and supplements, malware, hate, scams, bad user experience.

Advertisers & Offers

  • Advertising Types: Sponsored Content.
  • Offer Types: CPC.
  • Verticals: All.
  • Network Size: Over 100,000 blogs and websites.
  • Sampling of Publishers: New York Post, Slate.

  • Creating an Ad Unit: Implementing the Outbrain recommendation engine is very quick and easy. For WordPress publishers, Outbrain offers a virtually idiot-proof widget that is dead simple to implement. Outbrain also offers widgets for TypePad, Blogger, and Squarespace. There is also Javascript code for manual insertion on any platform that should be a breeze for most developers to install. Once the plugin is installed and configured, recommendations automatically begin to display after about an hour. In our experience, we noticed that Outbrain did not recommend any external content until about 24 hours later. On the first day, only internal recommendations (articles on our site) were presented. Now that we’ve been up and running for a few days, approximately one-third of the recommendations appearing in the widget are from external sites, which we would be able to earn revenue from with each click if we were enrolled in the premium publisher program.

  • Display Ad Unit Sizes Available: Choice of 1-10 content recommendations, displayed as thumbnail images or text-only links.
  • Compatible with Google AdSense: Yes.
  • Mobile Ad Units Available: Yes.
  • WordPress Plugin Available: Yes.

Publisher Reporting & Admin Control Panel

Outbrain Publisher Reporting & Admin Control Panel Rating: 4 out of 5.

  • Control Panel: The Outbrain publisher control panel is very simple. Under the Site Performance section, you can see reports on top content as well as a more detailed report of clicks and CTR. There is section where you can manage your blogs, or sites where you can install the recommendation widget. Here, you can select language, recommendation settings, whether or not you’d like to donate your earnings to charity, specify the number of recommendations to be displayed (1-10), and widget type (text links or thumbnail images). Under the Account Settings page, you can change your email address or password. Overall, it’s a pretty easy to use, but bare bones control panel; there is nowhere to enter payment details, as that is reserved for their premium publishers, and setup of that type of account is reserved for those publishers receiving at least 10 million monthly US page views on article pages.

  • Reporting: The Outbrain reporting, much like the control panel as a whole, is very basic. All reporting is delayed one day. (I.e., it is not possible to get the current day’s stats.) The dashboard displays CTR, page views, and clicks, along with a table of the most-clicked article and video content. The “detailed report” simply shows page views, clicks, and CTR by date. It defaults to a trailing 30-day view, though you can specify a custom time frame, if you’d like.

Editor’s Outbrain Review

This editor’s review is limited for a few reasons. Principally, while we were accepted as a publisher by Outbrain, we currently do not meet the traffic minimum to be eligible for revenue sharing, so we were limited in our ability to test everything firsthand. We hope to update this review in the future with more details. Outbrain, along with Taboola, is one of the top two sponsored content recommendation networks on the Internet.

They offer a simple widget for publishers to drop into their sites. This widget displays recommended content from both the site itself as well as from external sites around the Web. The recommendation engine is very easy to install, but earning significant revenue from it will prove tough for most publishers. Firstly, Outbrain only shares revenue with publishers who are generating at least 10 million US monthly page views on their articles. That high minimum will immediately filter out many smaller publishers who may be interested in using their service. (For these smaller publishers looking for a similar service, we recommend checking out Nster.) Publishers who do meet this traffic criterion are not automatically accepted into the premium program; they need to contact Outbrain from the publisher control panel and request admittance. Secondly, revenues generated with any sponsored content network tend to be low, compared to more traditional forms of online advertising (i.e., display). Couple that with the fact that many of the externally recommended links may appear to be somewhat spammy, and clearly sponsored content is not for everyone. The prospect of exposing your brand to recommendations of “funny dog videos” or entertainment gossip may make you think twice before chasing after that incremental revenue. That said, as far as sponsored content networks go, Outbrain is likely as good as it gets. Account creation and implementation of the widget on the publisher site is relatively quick and easy. Installing the widget is a breeze, and it automatically styles itself to keep with the look and feel of your site, which is a big plus. And the recommendation engine actually does a pretty good job of recommending related articles, at least on the internal site, making it a helpful feature for your users, which can lead to higher pageviews per visitor and more time spent on your site. While Outbrain claims that achieving a CTR of 4-10% is possible if one follows all of their UI best practices, we experienced lower CTR in the 1-2% range with our light implementation (six recommended articles immediately below each article). We have also noticed here at MonetizePros.com that the Outbrain widget’s recommendations, while not as spot-on as some other related-article plugins available for WordPress, usually did do a pretty good job of recommending articles within our site. That it was automatically styled properly and included a thumbnail from each article was helpful. There was no fiddling required; the plug-and-play nature of the Outbrain widget allowed us to set it and forget it, more or less.

Adsterra Review for Publishers 2018

Established in 2013, Adsterra quickly grew in popularity thanks to its unique approach to ad formats and the priority placed on quality service. Since its inception years ago, Adsterra has quickly become one of the fastest expanding ad networks online.
Pop-under advertising service for publishers.

Introduction to Adsterra

home-adsterra
Adsterra has seen a lot of success in the handful of years that it has been in operation so far. The network was launched in Scotland and is now expanding worldwide. It is currently serving more than 10 billion unique ad impressions each month. Each of these ad impressions is geo-targeted, displaying around the world. Currently, it is working with publishers and advertisers from over 190 different countries. The number is continuing to grow as they expand into even more countries.

Today, Adsterra works with thousands of different advertisers and publishers across the globe. They focus on both website advertising and mobile advertising for advertisers and publishers. Their main ad types include CPA, CPC, and CPM.
Adsterra specializes in unique and innovative advertising displays and combining them with intelligent ways to monetize off of those ads, both on the web and mobile.
They connect advertisers and publishers together who both want to profit using lot of effective ad formats like display banners, popunders, interstitials, direct links, and video banners. Although they offer may different ad types including cost per click and cost per view, it’s the pop-unders that they really specialize in. They offer a variety of different ad formats and ad sizes that you can use to maximize your revenues as a publisher.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5

What We Like: They specialize in pop-under ads. When you have access to a variety of different networks, it’s good to have some networks that have specialties. This is one of them. Rather than joining a network that is mediocre at everything, it’s better to join different networks that are great at different things. As far as pop-unders go, Adsterra is one of the best.
Adsterra makes it a priority to attract high-quality advertisers that are committed to marketing their brand. This not only gives you a lot of options as a publisher, it also gives you access to advertisers that are making an effort to give you every opportunity and tool that you need to maximize your results for the benefit of both of you.
What We Don’t Like: Although they have other types of ads that you can use, it’s not the best network if you are looking for something specific other than pop-unders. While they are great at what they specialize in, they are not the best network for publishers if you are looking to concentrate on a different type of ad format.

Adsterra also has a fairly high minimum payout threshold that you have to meet. If you’re just looking to get started with an advertising network and you anticipate starting out slowly, this may not be the right network for you. If you are in this situation, we recommend looking for an ad network that has a lower payment threshold, closer to $10.

Publisher Requirements

  • Your site must receive at least 5,000 impressions per month to qualify for pop-unders
  • Your site must receive at least 50,000 impressions per month to qualify for banner displays
  • Publishers that use fake traffic before or after they receive approval for the network will be banned. All of their traffic must be from legitimate sources
  • No illegal or adult content allowed

Publisher Restrictions

  • No fake traffic allowed
  • No traffic manipulation or traffic exchanges allowed
  • No adult content, drug or other illegal content allowed

Adsterra Ad Formats and Implementation

Adsterra Ad Formats and Implementation: 4 out of 5
Adsterra offers a variety of ads to publishers. Adsterra provides a number of different ad formats that their advertisers can create for their publishers to use. This ranges from the classic display banners to non-intrusive pop-unders that are waiting to be seen.
Adsterra does a great job displaying their pop-unders. As a publisher, you will be able to customize the pop-under, including how large the window is, and where on the screen it appears. You can experiment with this to find out what works the best for your advertising campaign.

Adsterra also allows for direct linking on their ads. This means you can profit off of sending a visitor directly to the landing page as opposed to flashing a banner in front of them beforehand.
As flexible as their desktop options are, Adsterra really excels in the mobile space. Adsterra employs an intelligent ad type. With their mobile ads, you will see the display pop-up so that it communicates the message to the mobile viewer without interrupting what they’re doing, which would otherwise cause frustration towards the brand.
When you use a mobile ad, it will display while the viewer is waiting for their next page to load. This allows you to display your ad in front of the entire screen without enticing the mobile user to actively close the ad. The other advantage of this is that you will get the entire screen for your ad during a time where the mobile user does not have anything else they want to look at until their pages finished loading.

Adsterra Publisher Reporting and Admin Control Panel

dashboard-adsterra
Adsterra Publisher Reporting And Admin Control Panel Rating: 5 out of 5
The Adsterra Control Panel is clean and easy to navigate through. They don’t overwhelm you with a dozen different options and features like other networks do. Instead, they keep a minimalist friendly interface, which makes it easy to stay on top of things and follow along with what you intend to do as opposed to getting distracted with all of the different features that other networks try to cram onto their dashboards.
We like this approach. It makes it easy to focus on what we logged in to do for each session. Even though it doesn’t look flashy, it does not hinder your ability to navigate through the different aspects of the network as you need. From the dashboard, you will be able to quickly access anything you need to get to in your account.

Payments

Payment Rating: 4 out of 5
Adsterra offers multiple ways that you can pay, which makes it easy to use, no matter what processor you rely on.
They accept:
  • PayPal
  • Wire Transfer
  • Web Money
  • Paxum
  • Payza
  • Payoneer
They pay out every two weeks. They require a $100 minimum before you can cash out. If you are using wire transfer, the minimum balance to cash out is $1000. There is a $45 charge if you use Wire Transfer, an 8% charge if you use Web Money, and a $1 charge if you request payment through Paxum. If possible, we recommend using PayPal for all of your transactions with Adsterra to keep the additional charges as low as possible.
payment-adsterra
If you are an advertiser, they require a minimum deposit of $500. This is good for publishers because it ensures that any advertiser that uses Adsterra is a serious one. From the publisher’s point of view, the more serious advertiser is about their marketing, the more money there is to be made for the publisher, which makes the $100 minimum threshold a lot more obtainable.

Account Help

Account Help Rating: 5 out of 5
Adsterra is well-known for the great customer support that they provide to their publishers. They offered 24 seven round-the-clock support and a personal account manager dedicated to every publisher. No matter what your problem is or when it occurs, you will be able to get a hold of the Adsterra support team anytime you need them.
They have a ticket system which they usually respond to within a day. You can also use their email or contact them instantly through Skype. For non-English speakers, they also offer support services in other languages, however, they may not be available 24-7.
Tech Implementation
Tech Implementation Rating: 4 out of 5
As far as mobile advertising goes, we feel like Adsterra has nailed it perfectly. It displays the ads in an intrusive way, without intruding on the user. It’s a great example of combining technology and creative thinking to provide some of the most intelligent and effective mobile advertising strategies you can use.
Adsterra also excels in their geo-targeting tools. It allows publishers to display different types of ads based on the location that the traffic is coming from. It doesn’t help you to display a US-only ad to someone that is accessing the site in Europe, or vice versa. This geo-targeted filter helps avoid wasting situations like that. You can split test different types of ads using their geo-filters to see what works best for what demographics.

Our favorite aspects of the technology that Adsterra has implemented is there real-time tracking. We have already mentioned this above, however, the importance of this cannot be overstated enough. If you take the time to learn how to use this tool, it can make a huge difference in the success or failure of your campaigns. You can use this data to track how your advertising campaigns are working in real time and adjust on the fly.
Lastly, Adsterra uses geo-edge technology to help prevent and eliminate suspicious activity. They can monitor where real traffic is coming from, which helps them cut back significantly on click farms and bot traffic, artificially inflating the results that the advertisers are receiving from their publishers. This may not seems significant; however, it plays a big role in why Adsterra is able to offer such high earnings for their ads. By virtually eliminating fraud from their network, they are able to pay their publishers higher rates than what other networks are able to afford.

Editor’s Adsterra For Publishers Review

If you fit the requirements, Adsterra can create a lot of opportunities for you. The right publisher can earn big payouts using this network. Adsterra offers their publishers real-time statistics. If you know how to use these to your advantage, you can fine-tune your marketing approach to maximize your revenues. If you have the right kind of traffic, the right ad types that they provide for you, and you combine them with the real-time statistics they offer, it can help you generate some serious earnings.

Pros Of Using Adsterra For Publishers

  • They specialize in pop-under advertising
  • They offer 24-7 support
  • They provide a 5% referral program
  • They offer support in other languages
  • They provide payments every two weeks
  • They have several payment options to choose from
  • They offer ads for computers and mobile devices
  • They attract high-paying advertisers
  • They have a huge variety of ad types and formats that you can choose from
  • They are an expanding company that should continue to update their network

Cons Of Using Adsterra For Publishers

  • They are not ideal for low volume publishers
  • Traffic restrictions make it difficult for people with small sites to join
  • The rates in other countries may be lower
  • They have a very high minimum payout level
  • They are a fairly new company that is still working on establishing themselves

Final Thoughts

Adsterra is a great ad network to use for publishers that have long-term and established sites. If you have a heavy source of US or European traffic, this ad network is going to be a great choice for you. It provides high payments that are comparable to AdSense, which makes it a great alternative. Adsterra crashes down tightly on publishers that violate their terms of service. If you plan on breaking any of their listed rules, we recommend planning for an eventual ban. If you are a website owner that is still working on growing their traffic, this is a network that you should wait on because you may not be able to meet the minimums that they require their publishers to have.

MGID Review for Publishers | Introduction to MGID

Introduction to MGID:

MGID Review
MGID offers native advertising solutions. This network provides solutions for both advertisers and publishers, and this review will be focused on the platform for publishers. With MGID, publishers are given two options: to either monetize traffic (through displaying advertisements) or by “recirculating” visitors.
Loading...
Most webmasters will be familiar with the first option, but the concept of recirculating refers to sending traffic to other websites, who in turn will send traffic back to yours. MGID accomplishes this with a “promoted content” widget which can appear at the end of your posts. The network bills this as “relevant content seamlessly integrated into user’s natural activity stream,” which is marketing-speak for “the user’s experience on your site won’t include being blasted with advertisements.”
You’ll be able to choose which kinds of content you “promote” with this widget, meaning that the content displayed can be within the same niche as your site—for example, a men’s entertainment style website won’t be forced to promote content about knitting. The widget can be customized so that it matches up with the currently existing design of your website, and a full-disclosure policy ensures that users will be aware of the fact that they aren’t reading content that you wrote or endorsed. The widget works with both desktop and mobile devices and, yes, can be easily integrated with WordPress.
Loading...
MGID states that visitor recirculation can increase user engagement and bring you new visitors from other publishers with websites about topics which are relevant to your own. There isn’t an upper limit on the recirculation/return ratio, and the network claims that this can reach 150% or more.

For publishers interested in displaying advertisements rather than recirculating traffic, MGID reports an average RPM of $1-3 with no cap. Advertisements have a 100% worldwide fill rate and can be shown on all devices and locations. Publishers who are familiar with Google AdSense or other display ad networks will likely find familiar territory in MGID’s offerings, with similar functionality and options available.

Advertisements can be displayed in a number of ways, which are left to the publisher’s discretion. Users can choose to display desktop advertisements as exit pops, header widgets, widgets underneath an article or blog post, and as a sidebar widget. Mobile display options include a header and under-content widget. Advertisements will be fully disclosed as such to website visitors, and will only be relevant to the category or niche that your website is in.
Loading...
MGID makes it easy for publishers who have never dipped their toes into the pool of recirculating traffic—or running display ads for that matter. This network has a decade plus history and, compared to some of the newer networks on the market, this gives them the advantage of time and experience to have worked out some of the kinks which plague younger players in this field.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5

What We like: Multiple traffic and monetization options on the same platform, easily integrated widgets, no cap on RPM or recirculation figures, low minimum payment, good customer support.
What We Don’t Like: Can increase bounce rate, relatively low payments

  • Control Panel: The MGID administrative control panel might seem a little daunting at first to new users, but with the assistance of your account manager and a little tinkering it should become relatively straightforward after the creation of your first widget. Users can create, customize, and save widgets. This means that even if you decide not to use a widget that you’ve made now, you can save it with a custom name for later use. You’ll have access to traffic statistics, click through rates, and more helpful data, as well as an instantly updated earnings report.
  • Reporting: Reporting on MGID is quickly updated and accurate. Whether you’re looking for advertisement data or traffic exchange data, these figures are easy to view and sort. MGID isn’t a small company, but compared to some of the larger players in the advertising network arena, they offer comparatively more rapid and helpful support.

Editor’s MGID Review for Publishers

Ad networks for publishers
One of the biggest challenges MGID has faced is assuring potential users that their widgets are compatible with other display ad networks, primarily Google AdSense. At the time of this writing the network is compliant with AdSense, but it’s in a publisher’s best interest to always review the TOS for whichever advertisement platforms that are going to be mingling on his or her site. When unsure, double check, and fire off an email or instant message to your account manager.
Which is the next notable point about MGID. The inclusion of a personal account manager is a nice touch, and adds an element of reliability to the already decent support options this network offers publishers as well as advertisers. Phone calls are returned relatively quickly and emails will be answered—depending on what you ask you may get boiler plate responses, but the inclusion of an account manager means that you have a real person who you can discuss the intricacies of your account and website with. This is rare for big ad networks.

Integration is simple with MGID, and the option to customize widgets means that they won’t stick out like a sore thumb on your currently existing website design. Creating and managing widgets is easy, and if one placement doesn’t work out, exporting settings to another widget (e.g., going from the sidebar to an under-article widget) can be done in minutes.
The option to play with both traffic exchange and display ad options on the same platform is an interesting setup, and publishers may wish to experiment to find out which option provides the most benefit. However, publishers without large amounts of traffic or traffic that’s hungry to click through probably won’t be retiring from their MGID earnings.
MGID is worth a test. Whether or not it’s a keeper will likely depend a great deal on your niche, traffic statistics, and personal goals.

Pros of Using MGID for Publishers

MGID has a lot going for it—over a decade of experience doesn’t hurt either.
  • Good customer service: Available through phone or email, MGID responds to inquiries relatively rapidly, and most likely faster than some of the other advertisement networks you may have worked with. Traffic exchange networks are a dime a dozen, but MGID is a great example of what customer service should look like—for other traffic recirculating setups, it’s often nonexistent.
  • Personal account manager: Standard customer service with MGID is good, but the availability of a personal account manager—which many major networks do not offer unless you’re a big spender or major publisher—is a godsend to individuals who need a little extra help or need detailed, website-specific questions answered.
  • Ease of integration: MGID’s widgets are simple to create, customize, and integrate into your currently existing website design.
  • Low minimum payment: This network offers a comparatively low minimum payout of $50 USD with PayPal and wire transfer .
  • Surprisingly good administration panel: “Surprisingly” because there’s a lot of options with MGID, with publishers having the option to recirculate traffic or to display ads. However, the network has managed to put all of these features into a single, easy to learn administration panel.

Cons of Using MGID for Publishers

MGID isn’t a bad option for publishers looking to get involved in display ads or traffic exchanges. However, there are a few caveats one should keep in mind:
  • Increased bounce rate possible: The nature of traffic exchange services like the one MGID provides for publishers inherently means that you’ll be sending traffic away from your site—while yes, it will be returned in the recirculation process, you’ll have to perform your own analysis as to how effective this is for your overall traffic strategy. Would it be better to retain your current users, or is your content good enough to hook new ones as well?
  • Ad relevance could be fine tuned: Ad and traffic exchange displays could be slightly better in terms of relevance. MGID displays “top internet stories” which, while attractive to many audiences, could be slightly better if you had more fine-tuning options to make the content as relevant to your audience’s interests as possible.
  • Low earning potential: An RPM of $1-3 isn’t terrible, but most publishers should expect earnings to be on the lower end of that spectrum. Display ads through MGID and similar networks are ideal for publishers with large traffic numbers or an audience willing to engage and place clicks.
  • Few payment options: It would be nice to have payment options outside of bank wires and PayPal, but to be fair these are likely the payment methods which most publishers will prefer.

Final Thoughts

MGID is a great network to test—as mentioned previously, whether or not you’ll decide to stick with their widget-based approach to advertisements and traffic exchange will be largely dependent upon your unique situation and typical goal scenario. The good news is that finding out if MGID is for you won’t be a complicated process—the above-average customer service, easy to use interface, and intuitive widget management and customization all make the features of this network a breeze to set up and integrate.
